Job Description

The Instructional Designer is responsible for the design and build of learning interactions within Charter's Customer Operations training programs. He/She produces learning interactions (classroom or online) to enable a specific learning experience that reinforces business-centric behavior requirements. The Instructional Designer collaborates with business partners and other learning professionals to develop learning solutions. He/She participates in collaborative design sessions with subject matter experts to understand the business and learning requirements. The Instructional Designer ensures the learning solutions are engaging, memorable and effective. He/She works with the training delivery team to validate the learning solutions created deliver the intended learning experience.


Provide recommendations for learning solutions to the Instructional Design Manager that demonstrate the business impact of training initiatives

Apply adult learning methods to create learning solutions aligned to support the behavior change required for the learning audience

Create quality learning solutions designed for self-guided (eLearning) consumption or Instructor Lead Training (ILT) materials for trainers to meet the needs of the supported audience

Apply modern adult learning techniques to support classroom, virtual and online learning with guidance from the Instructional
Design Manager and Lead Instructional Designers

Apply business skills to managing projects and coordinating with subject matter experts while building learning solutions

Promote collaboration, partnerships, and relationships among the learning and development team

Maintain accurate status of projects, milestones, and tasks in the team project tracking tool

Diagnose and escalate risks to design projects to appropriate L&D leaders and stakeholders

Support Lead Instructional Designers and Instructional Design Managers with the design of large-scale, engaging learning that enhances business performance

Actively and consistently support all efforts to simplify and enhance the customer experience

Develop partner relationships with SMEs and stakeholders to ensure the learning solutions are meeting expectations beyond initial implementation

Adhere to defined processes and standards established within L&D

Support team processes and standards

Communicate outcomes, risks, and follow ups that result from train the trainer activities to appropriate stakeholders

Create learning solutions that are innovative, highly engaging, and utilizes the most advanced techniques and technology available, with a demonstrable impact on business results

Perform other duties as requested

Skills/Abilities and Knowledge
  • Ability and experience creating content either for Instructor Lead Training (ILT) or Self-Guided Training (eLearning) using one of the following digital learning technologies (Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate, Camtasia)
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize, organize, and complete multiple assignments concurrently and meet deadlines
  • Ability to execute direction/feedback regarding inputs into a modern facilitated learning interaction that is aligned to design principles
  • Demonstrated understanding of how different roles within a business need tailored learning
  • Ability to show good judgment, take initiative, and make decisions to accomplish job duties
  • Demonstrate an ability to work closely with peers to ensure successful learning outcomes
  • Driven, focused, and oriented to the functional design
  • Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Adult Learning, Organizational Behavior, Communications, or related field required and/or certifications in a variety of L&D areas
Related Work Experience (at least one of the following)
  • 1 – 3 years Instructional Design and development experience
  • 1 – 2 years project management / project leadership experience
Skills/Abilities and Knowledg
  • Skills in consulting
  • Skills in measurement and evaluation of training initiatives
  • Relevant corporate experience in a large Fortune 100 company
  • Masters in Adult Learning or related field
  • Office environment
  • 10% travel required
