Lead Instructional Designer (elearning/ILT)

The Lead Instructional Designer is responsible for the design and build of learning solutions within Charter's Customer Operations training programs. He/She produces learning solutions (classroom, virtual, online) to enable a specific learning experience that reinforces business-centric behavior requirements.

The Lead Instructional Designer collaborates with business partners and other learning professionals to develop learning solutions. He/She participates in collaborative design sessions with subject matter experts to understand the business and learning requirements.

The Lead Instructional Designer ensures the learning solutions are engaging, memorable and effective in all modalities of delivery (classroom, virtual, online). He/She works with the training delivery team to validate the learning solutions created deliver the intended learning experience.


  • Provide recommendations for learning solutions to the Instructional Design Manager that demonstrate the business impact of training initiatives
  • Apply the latest adult learning methods to create learning solutions aligned to support the behavior change required for the learning audience
  • Create high-quality learning solutions designed for self-guided (non-facilitated) consumption as well as facilitator led materials for trainers to meet the needs of the supported audience
  • Research and apply modern adult learning techniques to support classroom, virtual and online learning
  • Ensures learning solutions are innovative, engaging, and on the cutting edge of brain science application
  • Engage subject matter experts in collaboration with the Instructional Design Manager to understand the reality the learning audience faces, while designing learning solutions based on subject matter expertise and the depth of knowledge they possess
  • Demonstrate expert knowledge of non-facilitated and facilitated learning methods as well as processes and standards required to create high quality learning solutions on time, and on budget
  • Apply business skills to managing projects and coordinating with subject matter experts while building learning solutions
  • Promote collaboration, partnerships, and relationships among the learning and development team
  • Collaborate with leadership team and business subject matter experts to design engaging learning that enhances business performance
  • Maintain accurate status of projects, milestones, and tasks in the team project tracking tool
  • Diagnose and escalate risks to design projects to appropriate L&D leaders and stakeholders
  • Collaborate with leadership team and business subject matter experts to design large-scale, engaging learning that enhances business performance, with minimal support
  • Actively and consistently support all efforts to simplify and enhance the customer experience
  • Serve as a mentor and/or knowledge resource to less experienced designers
  • Develop partner relationships with SMEs and stakeholders to ensure that training meeting expectations beyond initial implementation
  • Model the adoption of ongoing improvements in team processes and standards
  • Serve as creative and planning resource to internal customers
  • Identify improvements to team processes and champion their implementation
  • Serve as an authoritative resource on technical and process related issues
  • Communicate outcomes, risks, and follow ups that result from train the trainer activities to appropriate Stakeholders
  • Create training that is consistently innovative, highly engaging, and utilizes the most advanced techniques and technology available, with a demonstrable impact on business results
  • Perform other duties as requested

    Skills/Abilities and Knowledge
  • Demonstrated portfolio of building learning solutions with measureable results
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of training methodologies and tools (Video/Audio, Independent Reading, Online Forum, Branched eLearning, Decision eLearning, Gamification, Job Aide, Classroom)
  • Ability to use multiple digital learning technologies and software to deliver content (Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate, Camtasia)
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize, organize, and complete multiple assignments concurrently and meet deadlines
  • Ability to synthesize multiple inputs into a modern facilitated learning solution that is aligned to design principles
  • Demonstrated understanding of how different roles within a business need tailored learning
  • Demonstrated ability to educate, communicate, negotiate, and influence with all levels of management to produce learning solutions
  • Demonstrated ability to creatively solve problems while working under pressure
  • Ability to show good judgment, take initiative, and make decisions to accomplish job duties
  • Demonstrate an ability to work closely with peers to ensure successful learning outcomes
  • Driven, focused, and oriented to the functional design
  • Ability to determine technical proficiency benchmarks for the organization

  • Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Adult Learning, Organizational Behavior, Communications, or related field required and/or certifications in a variety of L&D areas
Related Work Experience (at least one of the following)
  • 7+ years Instructional Design and development experience
  • 3 + years project management / project leadership experience
Skills/Abilities and Knowledge
  • Skills in management consulting
  • Skills in measurement and evaluation of training initiatives
  • Relevant corporate experience in a large Fortune 100 company
  • Masters in Adult Learning or related field
Office environment
10% travel required
