Principal Engineer I - Video Operations

This is a multi-faceted support role that directly interacts with Video Operations Teams, Vendors, and other organizations within Charter as necessary to provide technical solutions. The role is responsible for driving technical direction and aiding in resolution during video related events, coordinating cross functional expertise within the VSC, delivering business critical projects, mentoring and educating other VSC personnel, managing operational tasks and activities in an efficient and professional manner and ensuring all team targets are met, as advised, by Video Operations leadership. This role is also expected to contribute to the department as a subject matter expert on video systems architecture for troubleshooting, problem mitigation, root cause analysis and data analytics for video system outages, impairments and chronic intermittent issues.

  • Responsible for engineering activities that maintain and enhance the company's video transportation, delivery, conditional access, and VOD/SDV systems.
  • Provide leadership for fixing firmware, software, and hardware supporting Charter’s video solutions.
  • Construct tech tips and troubleshooting documentation to validate functional performance for video acquisition, processing, and encoding solutions.
  • Assist in the repair, documentation and training of new test tools and automation frameworks to the VSC team.
  • Study future technology developments and formulate associated troubleshooting/ training/ reporting strategies.
  • Provide timely and accurate information and status updates to functional leaders.
  • Provide day-to-day technical leadership, mentoring, and technical guidance to VSC team members.
  • Develop and implement standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Understand and define technical roadmaps within Video Operations to ensure sound technical process, troubleshooting procedures and documentation exist within the Video Support Center.
  • Develop, design and implement video transportation troubleshooting solutions, documentation and training.
  • Support T4 operations and work with vendors and engineering, as needed, to resolve customer or redundancy related issues.
  • Trouble resolution, operations and maintenance of video systems
  • Provide internal advanced engineering support by using Cable TV technologies.
  • Responsible for creating and delivering training to the VSC team at large.
  • Undertaking special projects of assigned systems, including system troubleshooting, root cause analysis, reporting and documentation.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field, and / or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum eight (8) years video network engineering experience
  • Minimum eight (8) years of experience working with video systems from an operational and / or engineering perspective.
  • Minimum seven (7) years of experience working within an MSO environment
  • Minimum five (5) years of project management experience
  • Experience with Video acquisition, transcoding/encoding, multiplexing, and modulation, using such equipment as: Cisco DCMs, Arris CAP/DM6400 Cherry Pickers, BMRs, BNPs, Harmonic ProStreams and common cable CPE
  • Advanced knowledge of Video Compression (i.e. MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H264, HEVC, J2K, etc.) and Audio Compression (i.e. Dolby AC3, Dolby Digital Plus, AAC, etc.)
  • Understanding of IP networking, TCP/IP protocols, Routing and Switching
  • Experience with network and element management systems, Arris (DAC) and/or CISCO (DNCS) video delivery systems
  • Managing optical transport platforms service gateways (i.e. Cisco ONS, Infinera DTN / DTNx / Flex, Ciena).
  • Solid knowledge of related industry specifications and standards IEEE, ANSI, Physical Media (Multimode Fiber, Singlemode Fiber, UTP, etc.), bridging, switching, routing, Ethernet and transport technologies and protocols
  • Advanced experience working with Unix/Linux operating systems; specifically experience with RedHat, and Solaris
  • Technical knowledge of other key components of controller ecosystem: QPSK, Netcrypt, GQAM, NE, NC.
  • Advanced operational and troubleshooting skills on multiple aspects of Cable TV systems
  • Experience with some or all of the following cable technologies (i.e. EdgeQAM, DAC, DNCS/EC, Passport, SARA, and and the following Video On Demand technologies (i.e. Synamedia, Commscope, Concurrent and/or Ericsson).
  • Creating documentation with technical writing utilizing MS Office suite, scripting with either PERL, Bash, or Shell, as well as MYSQL, SQL
  • Advanced knowledge of networking and file management protocols
  • Experience working with backend systems; MySQL, SQL, etc.
  • Ability to self-manage time and priorities in a fast-paced work environment all while working with and lead cross-functional teams including Product, Operations, IT, Care, etc.
  • Industry and vendor specific certifications and training (NCTI, SCTE, BCT/E, CCNP, CCIE, CCDE, or CISS)

The pay for this position has a minimum of $90600. The actual salary offer may be higher as we carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience and location. Also, certain positions are eligible for additional forms of compensation such as commissions or bonuses.
