This position is responsible for managing the development, implementation, and coordination of external public relations strategies and day-to-day media relations for Spectrum Networks across New York, including: New York City, Albany, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and the Hudson Valley. The position is based in New York City.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Develop comprehensive, proactive external media strategies that have a positive impact on our news brand;
Develop and maintain relationships with industry and media contacts to foster a positive image of Spectrum Networks;
Provide strategic counsel to senior executives on communications strategies and messaging;
Evaluate and orchestrate executive participation in speaking arrangements and press events while maintaining strong media/press relationships;
Develop broad-based PR ideas and create opportunities for positive coverage for talent, programming and digital initiatives;
Proactively assist in managing Spectrum’s reputation in traditional and digital media;
Build and maintain media lists; monitor press coverage and create summary reports;
Write, edit and distribute press releases and media alerts;
Perform a leading role on projects, working closely with internal clients to understand key business issues;
Collaborate with Spectrum Networks’ marketing and digital team to optimize performance;
Plan, implement and staff PR events;
Research communication possibilities for diverse media (e.g. print publications, websites, online and social media, etc.);
Assist with PR for all news and sports networks as needed;
Manage numerous projects simultaneously under deadline pressure;
Perform other duties as requested by Supervisor.
Skills/Abilities and Knowledge
Excellent writing and proofreading skills, as well as knowledge of AP style and common terminology in the media space;
Ability to proactively find, craft and successfully pitch stories to press;
Experience in issues management and crisis communications;
Proactive and strategic thinker, detail oriented and independent, with the ability to prioritize a complex and ever-changing workload;
Familiarity with research, analytics and insights;
Deep understanding of social media;
Established relationships with key television and news journalists;
Interest in and passion for news and how the media is changing, including its migration to a digital format, what makes a news story, how to control a story, and how to effectively reach journalists with key messages;
Ability to stay calm under pressure, communicate effectively with all levels of management and maintain confidentiality as needed;
Team player who is willing to pitch in where needed;
Bilingual a plus.
Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications or related field or equivalent experience
Related Work Experience
Minimum 5-7 years relevant communications positions and experience
Travel – approximately 30%
