Spectrum Networks seeks to provide the most essential local news and information, cultivating relevant and thoughtful conversations that foster informed and engaged communities.

The Environment: Spectrum News is a 24-hour breaking news network which requires employees who are flexible and available to work various shift, including early morning, late evenings, weekends and holidays.

What we’re looking for: The Assignment Desk Manager is responsible for the management of the Assignment Desk function and the Assignment Desk team. Anticipates situations, meets strict deadlines, organizes and manages multiple priorities and is pro-active in dealing with breaking news and high-stress situations. Manages staff to ensure news and stories are appropriately covered. Develops and administers schedules and performance requirements for the department.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Hire and supervise all assignment desk personnel
  • Liaise with News Director to create individual development plans for all desk editors
  • Supervises the news gathering process and directs the assignment and reporting staffs in the Triangle area and the Coastal newsroom to maintain quality and ethical standards
  • Provides leadership, guidance and advice concerning production issues and resolve problems
  • Direct field personnel as needed in assigning news coverage and stories, working with shift Executive Producers
  • Gather and research story ideas through beat calls and reading wire services, newspapers, magazines and social media
  • Demonstrate news judgment in selecting and/or recommending stories
  • Maintain communication with all personnel involved with newscast
  • Coordinate with Assignment Desk at sister stations for coverage sharing
  • Create and distribute coverage grid to sister stations and authorized partners
  • Continuously evaluates resources needed for robust coverage of local and national news events and presents recommendations to News Director
  • Fill in as Assignment Editor on occasion
  • Follow through on all assignments meeting required deadlines
  • Develop sources within the community, including government agencies and public relations representatives
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Skills/Abilities and Knowledge
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English
  • Has extensive experience with, and knowledge of, all aspects of the assignment desk and field news gathering
  • Excellent collaboration skills and ability to work effectively within a team environment and interact with all personnel within the organization
  • Proficient at inspiring staff to attain station goals of creativity, urgency and accuracy
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to anticipate situations and plan over a one- to two-year time span
  • Ability to anticipate situations, meet strict deadlines, organize, and manage multiple priorities
  • Attention to detail
  • Must be able to work rapidly and accurately
  • Knowledge of current events and industry trends
  • Pro-active with demonstrated enthusiasm in dealing with breaking news and high-stress situations
  • Must be able to effectively train others
  • Working knowledge of general office computer software and newsroom software
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data
  • Ability to effectively present information to management
  • Ability to make decisions and solve problems while working under pressure
  • Ability to show judgment and initiative and to accomplish job duties
  • Must be able and willing to work different shifts, report to work on time, and be flexible with schedule changes
Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism, Management or related field or comparable journalism-related management work experience
  • 5+ years of Assignment desk experience in television news
  • 2+ years of Management experience

  • Overtime may be required to meet deadlines
  • Varying schedule due to, breaking news and/or daily news coverage requirements
  • Provide 24x7, 365 days per year, on-call support. May entail phone or physical presence at the facility for equipment failure or other disasters. This includes, but is not limited to equipment and power failures, loss of contracted services, storms or severe weather, and schedule conflicts
  • Participation in an established on-call rotation
