Spectrum News North Carolina is available on channels 14 and 200 and in the western foothills of North Carolina on channels 2, 14 and 711 exclusively on Spectrum for customers in North Carolina. Spectrum News North Carolina serves the Triad (Greensboro, Winston-Salem and High Point), Wilmington, Charlotte and the Triangle (Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill) markets and provides 24-hour local news, politics, features and weather seven days a week.
The 24-hour news channel shares content with its sister channels in the Spectrum News Networks family: Spectrum News channels in upstate New York (Albany, Hudson Valley, Syracuse, Binghamton, Buffalo), New York City, New York; in Austin and San Antonio, Texas and in Tampa and Orlando, Florida.
JOB SUMMARY Research and write news scripts for assigned shows and newscasts. Research, develop, write, edit and shoot news stories on deadline. Contribute to special features and stories. Participate in coordinating coverage of major stories, breaking news and specials.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Write news stories for an assigned show and/or newscast, ensuring content is factually correct and written in a clear and concise conversational style
Verify stories are written to the pictures being edited and/or vice versa
Follow through on all assignments meeting required deadlines, including contributing to story ideas and development
Report within assigned deadlines
Fill-in producing shows and newscasts as needed
Work with a photographer on occasion
Work with assignment desk editors and master control operators and independently in the newsgathering process
Conduct pre-interviews and on-camera interviews
Responsible for representing channel in a professional manner
Participate in shooting, scripting and editing, as directed
Write, shoot and edit own news stories for an assigned newscast or news series
Combine video, audio and graphics to tell the story effectively
Perform editing functions as needed
Work in a computerized newsroom environment
Manage general upkeep of assigned company equipment
Assist assignment desk and media management, as directed
Perform other duties as assigned
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Skills/Abilities and Knowledge
Ability to read, write, speak and understand English
Strong broadcast news writing ability
Ability to anticipate situations, organize and manage multiple priorites and meet strict deadlines
Interpersonal skills and excellent collaboration skills
Ability to relate well with diverse populations and age groups
Ability to work effectively within a team environment and interact with all personnel within the organization
Knowledge of current events and industry trends
Attention to detail
Familiarity with the local market
Knowledge of social media platforms
Must be able to work rapidly and accurately
Working knowledge of general office computer software, newsroom software and basic non-linear editing systems a plus
Basic editing skills
Must be able and willing to work different shifts and be flexible with schedule changes
High School diploma required; Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism or related field or comparable television work experience preferred
Must obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license for authorized driving in the State of residence
Related Work Experience 2+ Years Television news experience
Works primarily inside a climate controlled environment throughout the year but might be assigned field duties on occasion and subjected to various weather conditions that could include extreme heat or cold conditions
Must be able to work under time pressure deadlines and willing and able to work different shifts or longer shifts due to “breaking news” and severe weather emergencies.
Willing and able to work weekends and holidays
Works in an open newsroom setting with a semi-noisy environment
Lifting and carrying up to 70 pounds
