As the Sr. Director of News, you have the chance to set the strategy for a 24/7 local news network covering Texas, shaping the future of local news in the process. The Sr. Director of News is the most senior newsroom leader, responsible for all editorial and news programming to help keep local communities across the Lone Star State informed. The Sr. Director of News runs operations, talent management, budget planning, production, and more across three newsrooms – Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio.

In addition to editorial strategy, the Sr. Director of News is a strong leader of people, continuously elevating performance and raising the bar across the networks. By exchanging consistent, constructive feedback on programming, this role guides an approximately 100-person team in covering everything from breaking news and weather forecasts to deep dives, beat journalism, and special programming.

Your reliability and guidance through all phases of the employee lifecycle will drive a positive and cohesive work environment. Through your out-of-the-box ideas and robust leadership, you will deliver elevated storytelling to your local audiences.

• Closely collaborating with other leaders across the Spectrum News footprint of 30+ local networks
• Setting the strategy for covering the top stories of the day
• Leading complex, distributed teams across many functions, including editorial, production, and more


WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO SPECTRUM NEWS  

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience: News experience – 10+ years, Management experience – 7+ years
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism or comparable experience
  • Technical skills: Programming knowledge and an understanding of the evolving digital media landscape
  • Skills: Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to cultivate relationships and motivate co-workers

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Journalism or commensurate area of study 

Working Conditions:

  • Works primarily inside a climate-controlled environment throughout the year
  • Works in an open newsroom setting with a semi-noisy environment
  • Works different shifts and be flexible with schedule changes
  • May be required to lift up to 5 pounds
