Maintenance Technician Accepts Leader’s Challenge to Progress

Sometimes, a gentle nudge is what we need to go out of our comfort zone and do something that benefits us. For Alex, that nudge came from the top. Alex joined the company in 1999 in the installation department. After seven years, he accepted a role as a Maintenance Technician I, where he was mentoring others and helping train them to do the tasks needed to advance their careers. And he watched many of his colleagues progress past him. Alex says he felt self-progression coursework didn’t suit his learning style. But after receiving a letter in the mail from company leaders challenging him to take advantage of available self-progression opportunities, he knew he had to step outside his comfort zone. Then he got a phone call from Tom, Executive Vice President, Field Operations, who convinced him to overcome his fears and face the challenge head-on. Now, six months after Alex started his self-progression, and having progressed to a Maintenance Technician III, he has a simple message for others: Overcome your fears and take the leap. “If you’re not progressing to the next level, you are missing out,” he said. “You truly are.”
