Former Baseball Player Is Now a Different Kind of Superstar
As a Maintenance Technician III in El Paso, Yury helps keep our South Texas network running smoothly. Having joined Spectrum 15 years ago, his career journey was anything but conventional.
Born in the Dominican Republic, a country where baseball is a way of life, he quickly rose through the ranks as a promising player. His talent was undeniable, and in his late teens, he signed a contract to play professionally in New York.
“Baseball was everything to me,” Yury said. “It taught me hard work, discipline and how to push through challenges.”
Yury spent six years in the minor league system, first as a shortstop and then as a pitcher.
Like so many young athletes, Yury’s baseball career was cut short by injury, leaving him with the question that every former athlete must face: What’s next?
In 2010, friends in Texas helped him get a job in the cable industry as an entry-level installer. While he didn’t have the experience, he had the desire to learn and knew how to adapt and thrive under pressure.
Yury says the first time he climbed a utility pole, it felt like standing on a pitcher’s mound; instead of figuring out batters, he was understanding network issues. The skills he had honed as an athlete – discipline, adaptability and teamwork – translated to his new career. After progressing through field service, in a few years he moved into Plant Maintenance. He continued to grow all the way to the top level, being promoted to Maintenance Technician III.
“I never imagined doing this kind of work, but I ended up loving it,” Yury said. “It’s a different kind of team, a different kind of competition, yet the drive to be the best is still the same.”
Since joining Spectrum, Yury has applied the same work ethic that made him a standout on the mound to his role in the field. He approaches troubleshooting and resolving impairments in our network with the mindset of an athlete: focused, driven and always striving to improve.
Recently, Yury was named a Spectrum Superstar, an achievement that recognizes the top Field Operations performers. For him, this honor is more than just a title – it’s proof that success isn’t confined to one dream.
“In baseball, the best players get called to the All-Star game,” he said. “Being named a Superstar is our all-star game and proves hard work pays off."
