Why Spectrum's Commitment to Accessibility and the Disability Community Matter to Me

Anne Swords, VP of Strategic Initiatives, learned she had Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) as a child, a rare genetic eye disorder that causes progressive vision loss over an unpredictable timeline. There was no way to know exactly when or how much vision she would lose. She just knew, eventually, she would.

Eighteen years into her career at Spectrum, that reality has arrived. Anne has lost most of her vision and now navigates her workday with limited central vision, relying heavily on technology and accessibility tools to do her job.

A Different Kind of Workplace Experience

For Anne, living with a disability has shaped more than how she works. It has shaped how she shows up for others in the workplace too. She describes herself as more driven, adaptive, resilient and compassionate because of it.

That mindset led her to take on a leadership role within our Spectrum Disability Business Resource Group (BRG), a voluntary employee community she now co-chairs. Her focus reflects the BRG’s mission: to empower the growth and success of employees of all abilities by providing connections to technology, education, support and community outreach.

A Commitment to Supporting the Disability Community

Anne's dedication to supporting colleagues with disabilities complements Spectrum’s broader commitment to designing products and workplace tools for people of all abilities. Our Accessibility Center of Excellence continues to expand employee tools and accommodations, with all customer-facing Spectrum apps launched since 2018 being built and designed with accessibility in mind and bringing American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation service to nearly 100 Spectrum Stores.

For Anne, that tangible support includes the technology Spectrum provides to help her do her job: an iPad, a large, curved monitor and screen reader software. She also relies on trusted colleagues for help navigating unfamiliar settings, like conferences. "I feel supported here," she says. "My disability hasn't detracted from that feeling."

The same dedication to accessibility extends to our customers. Anne points to ongoing efforts to make sure our tools and services work for every customer, ensuring that our customers feel seen and heard, not just served.

Anne's story is a reminder that employees of all abilities can thrive with the right tools, technology and support. At Spectrum, accessibility is the foundation of every experience we build for our customers and teams.
