Recruiters Reveal What Makes a Job Applicant Stand Out
Are you interested in learning more about sales roles at Spectrum? In today’s competitive job market, it can be a challenge to know exactly how to make a great impression. Below, three recruiters who help find top talent to join our Spectrum Sales team outline the traits that make a candidate stand out during the interview process.
What are the three most important qualities that you look for in job applicants?
Communication skills, a positive attitude, and a sense of motivation. To be successful in sales, you have to know how to communicate effectively, first and foremost. A positive attitude is also key. Even the best salespeople can have bad days, but choosing to start each new day with a positive outlook is important to your success. It also helps you stay motivated. Whether it’s our pay and benefits package or our career progression opportunities, it’s important to stay focused on the goals that drive you, so you can stay positive and be successful, even on your toughest days.

Enthusiasm. A candidate’s demeanor comes across not only in our conversation, but also in their body language. If someone doesn’t seem excited about our interview, are they really going to be excited about the role? I look for someone who can carry a conversation with me, which usually means they’ll be able to engage our customers in conversations.
Adaptability. Change is inevitable as we innovate, grow, and improve our products, services and processes staying flexible in how you approach success is really important.
Being open to feedback. When I interview candidates, I typically ask if they’ve received feedback in their previous roles. Being receptive to feedback on ways to improve is key, because our sales leaders are observing and providing feedback constantly. For the Store Specialist and Sales Advisor roles that I recruit for, being receptive to feedback is essential to personal growth, professional development, and achieving shared goals.

Professionalism. It goes beyond dressing appropriately. I pay attention to how candidates interact with me. If they show up prepared, on time, and exude positivity and respect, it’s a strong indicator that they will likely show that same professionalism when interacting with our customers.
Preparedness. If you’re interviewing to be a member of our Sales team, it’s crucial to demonstrate some understanding of our company and our products and services. Do your research ahead of time. It shows that you’re eager to learn.
Ambition. It’s also important for candidates to demonstrate that they’re committed to learning and growing in a role. On our Sales team, there’s a lot to learn, especially at the beginning. If candidates don’t miss days during training, and demonstrate they’re reliable, they will see all the great opportunities Spectrum has to offer.
Having all three of these qualities demonstrates a strong work ethic and the ability to make a big impact in the company.
