Q: Tell us about your background, how you found Spectrum’s internship program and the work you did as an intern.
Laine – My degree is in business data analytics. I found the internship on Handshake and interned on the Business Process Improvement team. I appreciated that I got to use creativity to help solve problems that offered a real sense of purpose.
Connor – I studied applied mathematics and was drawn to the internship program because it would give me the opportunity to work in data analytics solving real-world problems.
Calvin – I discovered the internship program at a career fair in 2020. My degree is in IT, and I interned for the Billing Quality Assurance team. It was challenging work, but I thrived in the collaborative environment.
Crystal – I was a computer science major and initially interested in game design. I found the internship online after I decided to pursue something more analytical, and research based. I interned on the Building Systems and Access Management team.
Q: What are you doing now in Customer Operations?
Laine – I’m a Business Analyst working on outage management, addressing customer needs during natural disasters to keep services reliable. I was surprised by the work being done to support outage coordination during disasters—it showed me how broad and impactful telecom can be.
Connor – I am a QA Analyst on the Billing Process Automation team. I use Structured Query Language (SQL) to do data-driven testing and streamline operations in our billing systems.
Calvin – I’m also a QA Analyst and focus on testing the billing system to ensure it works as intended and that all changes are implemented correctly.
Crystal – I’m currently a Billing Analyst and help ensure that our billing systems and processes align with internal policies and external regulations. I perform different quality tests and audits that make sure we’re protecting our customer data in everything we do.
Q: How have you grown in your career since starting full-time?
Connor – I joined in 2022 as an Associate QA Analyst and earned a promotion to QA Analyst by 2023, building my expertise in automation and analytics.
Calvin – I also went full-time post-graduation in 2022 and became a QA Analyst by June 2025, advancing through my work in testing and validation by collaborating with different teams within my department. I thought I’d pursue work in data science before I found Spectrum, but I found my niche in the world of software testing.
Crystal – I’ve worked within three different teams since I joined the company – and I think my progression is directly linked with my continued learning and the new knowledge and skills I acquired in each role.
Q: How does full-time work differ from being a student?
Connor – I traded exam cramming for structured routines and a focus on long-term impact.
Laine – I’ve shifted to a world of routine, accountability and team synergy, focusing on sustained impact rather than temporary assignments.
Q: What advice do you have for students considering applying for our internship program?
Laine – I’d say ask tons of questions—curiosity opens doors.
Calvin – I recommend embracing challenges; there are many opportunities to grow.
Connor – Network, find mentors, show your leaders that you’re driven. And if you receive a full-time offer after graduation, don’t forget to use Guild – Spectrum’s Education Benefit that lets you earn a degree or certification at no cost!
Crystal – Be open to change and the learning that comes from stepping out of your comfort zone. It will help you gain new skills and become a stronger person.
