Total Rewards, Explained: Pay, Benefits & Ownership at Spectrum
What does total rewards actually mean at Spectrum? Nick Dunlap, Vice President of Compensation at Spectrum, breaks down how Spectrum's benefits are designed to help employees earn more, grow faster and take ownership of their careers.
How do you ensure pay and bonus plans stay competitive?
We regularly compare our pay, bonuses, and total rewards against similar roles at other telecom and media companies—and we exchange best practices with groups like C2HR—to stay competitive.
We’re always looking for ways to improve and build upon the plans we offer our employees. For example, in 2022 we increased our minimum wage from $15 to $18 an hour – and in 2024, increased it again to $20 an hour, nearly three times the federal minimum wage.
Across the company, we provide clear career paths that help our employees build skills, move up and earn more over time, so that they can build long, successful careers here.
How do you create benefits that support the needs of your employees?
Our comprehensive benefits package is designed to support our employees in every aspect of their lives and includes our high-quality and affordable health and insurance benefits, our market-leading retirement plan and more.
What health and insurance benefits does Spectrum offer?
We offer medical, dental and vision coverage, health care accounts, life and disability insurance – and we’ve absorbed cost increases for these plans for the past 13 years to help employees keep more of their pay.
Beyond core coverage, employees and their families have access to our Live Well program, which includes 24/7 confidential counseling and mental health resources. We also offer fertility benefits, including adoption and surrogacy support.
How does Spectrum support employees’ retirement savings?
To help build long-term savings for the future, we match employees’ 401(k) contributions dollar-for-dollar up to 6% of their pay. We also contribute another 3% to a Retirement Accumulation Plan (RAP) for most employees, helping to build a solid financial foundation for their retirement.
Does Spectrum offer education benefits or tuition reimbursement?
Yes. While many companies cap their tuition reimbursement at the IRS limit, we’ve removed traditional barriers to continued education by offering tuition-free degrees. Our program, powered through our partnership with Guild, is helping our employees grow their skills and their careers and enables employees to continue or complete their education at no cost.
We’re seeing this benefit have a positive impact on our workforce. Employees who participate in Guild are 20% more likely to be promoted and 19% more likely to stay.
We also provide up to $10,000 per year towards graduate degrees and other programs outside the Guild catalog.
Do employees receive free or discounted Spectrum products and services?
Yes. Through our Employee Connectivity Services benefit, employees are eligible to receive free and discounted Spectrum products and services. While the specific products and services will vary based on where our employees live, all employees are eligible for Xumo Stream and deep discounts on Spectrum Mobile.
Do you offer stock or equity—and is it competitive?
Our equity incentive plan provides leaders with a stake in the company and our shared success. Employees who do not participate in our equity plan are eligible to participate in our Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP). Our ESPP gives employees the opportunity to buy Charter stock via payroll deductions, and we provide matching Restricted Stock Units that grow with tenure.
Our ESPP is uniquely designed to reward employees’ commitment to our company. When employees participate in the ESPP, they build an ownership stake in our company. In addition, nearly 85% of employees are eligible for additional variable compensation, such as annual bonuses and sales commissions, tied to performance.
