When Sr. Residential Connectivity Sales Specialist Martin Serva joined Spectrum a little over a year ago, he was looking for a fresh start in sales. “It turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” he says. Discover how Martin has built a successful career on our team below.
Tell us a little about yourself and what led you to your current role. I spent over a decade in automotive sales at various car dealerships, which sparked my interest in sales. Living in a smaller waterfront resort community in Michigan with an economy fueled by seasonal tourism, I wanted a role with more stability, growth and strong, year-round earning potential. Although I hadn't envisioned myself in door-to-door sales, I decided to give Spectrum a shot.
Sales is all about people—listening, understanding what matters to them and finding the right solutions. At the dealership, I built relationships, worked through objections and interacted with all kinds of people daily. Those same skills apply here.
What do you enjoy most about your job? I love the variety in this job. Every day is different, and you meet so many people; you never really know what the day will bring. I also enjoy not going to the same place every day because it keeps things exciting. I start my mornings at the gym and spend time with my family before heading out, and I try to be home in time to see my kids in the evening. One of the best parts of this role is the flexibility it offers me in my schedule. In my previous job, I was working 50 to 60 hours a week. Now I have more control over my day.
What keeps you motivated when you face challenging situations? Sales can be tough. You’re going to hear “no,” you’re going to meet people who are busy or not interested, and some days you have to work harder to build momentum than others.
What helps me is not taking those moments to heart. You never know what someone else is dealing with, so I always stay professional, respectful and focused on the next opportunity. I remind myself that every door is a fresh start, and it helps me stay consistent, protect my energy and keep moving forward.
What makes this job personally fulfilling? Helping people - that’s what drives me. Whether it’s showing someone a better value, helping a former customer come back, or explaining our products and services in a way that makes sense, it feels good to know I’m making a difference for the customer and for my family at the same time.
Are there any moments from your first year that stand out? Definitely. I’ve been a top performer since I started and have earned recognition through the annual Spectrum Elite Sales Program, which included a performance-based trip to Cancun. I ranked second in my region and reached the top tier among thousands of sales team members nationwide. It’s an accomplishment I’m incredibly proud of.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career in sales at Spectrum? If you’re self-motivated, enjoy talking to people and want a role where your effort really matters, this can be an incredible career. Bring energy, stay disciplined and believe in the value of what you offer.
