What you can expect in this role  

As a Spectrum intern, you’ll spend the summer working alongside two teams: your respective department and your intern cohort.

Department and team-focused projects account for about 80% of your schedule. You’ll spend the other 20% on internship experiences that include a kickoff conference, professional development sessions and networking activities, webinars, community service, cross-functional projects and final presentations.

This experience is designed to help you explore your interests, expand your network and leave with a deeper understanding of both your field and the impact of our business.

The Video Software Engineering Intern provides technical support to the Video Platform Engineering organization, which is responsible for the design, development, and operation of high-scale backend services that deliver cloud DVR, video playback, authentication, entitlements, and content discovery capabilities to millions of Spectrum customers nationwide. The intern will contribute directly to production microservice development within an AWS-based distributed systems environment, gaining hands-on experience in enterprise software engineering practices including spec-driven development, automated testing, continuous integration, and agile delivery methodologies.

Internship responsibilities may include:

  • Develop production-quality features and defect resolutions for Java and/or TypeScript microservices under the mentorship of senior software engineers
  • Author unit, integration, and contract tests in accordance with the team's spec-driven development standards
  • Participate in peer code review processes within GitLab, providing and incorporating constructive technical feedback
  • Conduct performance analysis of backend services, including database query optimization and API latency profiling
  • Contribute to engineering documentation including API specifications, architecture decision records, and operational runbooks
  • Support observability and reliability initiatives by enhancing monitoring dashboards, alerting configurations, and structured logging within Datadog
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies including daily stand-ups, sprint planning, backlog refinement, and retrospectives with an assigned delivery team
  • Research and document technical modernization opportunities such as dependency upgrades, database migration strategies, and infrastructure optimization patterns
  • Deliver a formal presentation summarizing project accomplishments, technical contributions, and key learnings to engineering leadership at the conclusion of the internship

Required qualifications

  • Must be a rising senior with an expected graduation date between December 2027 and May 2028
  • Must be currently enrolled in an accredited College or University completing a bachelor’s degree
  • Must have at least a 3.0 GPA or greater in current program
  • Ability to travel locally to Spectrum intern development events and activities throughout the program
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. without restrictions or need for future sponsorship

Preferred Qualifications

  • Java (required) - TypeScript / JavaScript (preferred)
  • SQL (familiarity with relational and document-oriented query languages)

Technical Knowledge:

  • Object-oriented programming principles and design patterns
  • RESTful API design and development
  • Version control systems (Git)
  • Cloud computing fundamentals (AWS preferred — EC2, S3, DynamoDB, DocumentDB)
  • Containerization concepts (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Unit testing frameworks and test-driven development methodologies
  • Message-oriented middleware concepts (Kafka, RabbitMQ, or similar)
  • CI/CD pipeline fundamentals

Professional Competencies:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to interpret and implement from technical specifications and architecture documentation
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-directed learning with the ability to operate in a fast-paced, collaborative engineering environment
  • Attention to detail and commitment to code quality
